Identify your “why” and let that inform your mindset
This week’s guest, John Sachse, is a Kansas-based mindset coach helping people to discover their full potential through fitness. Fitness is both mental and physical, and John talks us through how establishing a routine can help you make intentional choices for personal growth.
The first steps in creating a growth mindset for yourself are: establishing routines, visualizing goals, and reverse engineering your life. John is passionate about using routines and small goals to help you reach your overarching goal to reach your “why”.
In addition to working as a mindset coach, John is a husband, father, rancher, and Army National Guard officer.

[9:14]: Managing a multigenerational business
“A lot of times in ag, and any business really, if there’s multigenerational businesses happening, a lot of times the generations will butt heads. But, in our case, it works. I’m blessed with how it works, because my dad’s passionate about the crops, and I handle the cattle.”
[13:11] Comparing yourself
“It’s really not fair, because everybody, in life, in business, whatever you’re doing, everybody is on a different path. Everybody is on a different trajectory. Everybody has different experiences. So, it’s really not fair for me to compare myself to a neighbor.”
[17:53] Putting yourself first
“Everybody, no matter what you’re doing, needs to put yourself first, or you’re not going to be able to do it very long-term. If you’re always putting others before yourself, you do have to be present and take care of yourself.”
[22:14] Establishing your mindset
“We’re establishing what we want our mind to be on for the day. We’re telling the day what we’re going to do with it, rather than flip flop, where the world’s going to tell you what it’s going to take from you.”
[24:45] Giving yourself grace
“Things aren’t always going to go the way you intend them to. I certainly learned that in the military. It’s kind of a joke in the officer world, when you make plans, typically you want three or four plans after plan A. Because plan A never happens. You have to be flexible and give yourself grace.”
[27:23] We’re always changing
“If you know what your overarching goal, or dream, or vision for your life is, you know what your “why” is – why you do what you do. You’ve got to make those small, incremental plans to get to your “why”. I think we’re always changing as people, and because of that, our small incremental goals might be changing too.”
[32:28] Mental health is health
“Mental health shouldn’t have a negative connotation. We need to take care of our health. And there’s just such a negative connotation with that, and there shouldn’t be.”
